    Description

Our cotswold old english self binding gravel is perfect for laying as walkways and pathways and is often used in parks and nature trails. Unlike our other gravels the fines have not been removed from this material, which allows it to bind when compacted or rolled, providing for a hard wearing material that unlike concrete or tarmac can be dug up removed or recycled. It is generally scuff resistant and if damage occurs to the surface due to wheels or tracks making indentations, these can be easily filed and re compacted. The golden nature of this material make it an attractive colour that blends in with the natural surroundings, whether you need a path that’s 5 metres or 500 metres, this material will do a great job and is available in bulk bags or loose over 5m3.

    What is self-binding gravel

Hoggin is a compactable groundcover that is composed of a mixture of claygravel, and sand or granite dust that produces a buff-coloured bound surface. It is more commonly seen in the south of England and at National Trust properties. The material is aesthetically suited to older properties and is lower maintenance than gravel alone since it does not need regular raking. Once laid, the surface is somewhat permeable to water and therefore does not easily hold puddles or generate rapid surface runoff. The material is increasingly being used at domestic properties as a low cost and environmentally friendly alternative to concrete and block paving in paths and driveways.

A compacted sub-base of larger crushed stone is often laid prior to the top layer of hoggin, especially if the area to be covered is soft ground, or prone to puddling. The larger rocks provide a firm base for the hoggin, and improved drainage

What is Self Binding Gravel? Self Binding Gravel is a blend of either 10mm or 8mm sized gravel particles, gravel dust, sand and clay that binds firmly when compacted. Not only does it look neat and attractive but it’s also easy to maintain – just requiring the odd bit of weeding
